Thomas E. Deering, PH.D.

My name is Tom Deering. I am a native of St. Louis, Missouri, but am now living in South Dakota. I received my PH.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and I am a career educator. Over the past 43 years I have taught at both the secondary and the college/university levels. I have also served in a number of administrative positions in K-12 schools, and departments and colleges of education. My passion, however, is teaching. I love interacting with students, helping them grapple with new ideas, helping them shape and reshape their thinking. We all feel a great sense of accomplishment when we work through a problem or issue and commit to a stand. In my spare time I continue to write for publication and conference presentations. I also love to learn by traveling. My family and I have been to most of the states here in the U.S., and we have visited the UK a number of times to visit my wife's family -- her mother was from England, and for me to teach summer courses in London. I have also visited most of Western Europe. If I have any time at the end of the day, I read mystery novels. But my passion will always be teaching.
