James Connelly, Ed.D.
I’ve been an instructional designer and consequently involved in adult education and higher education since the mid-1970s. Before that, I was a radio operator in the Navy, a telecommunications specialist for the CIA, and a Radio Officer in the Merchant Marine (with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration). In 1983 I graduated from the University of Memphis with a Doctorate in Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Within the broader field of Instructional Design, I concentrated on creating instructional material, primarily video. This became focused on medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and the allied health professions when I took a position at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. While there, between 1984 and 2000, I produced almost 800 major productions for a variety of clients, many of which were multinational companies. Consequently, our target audience primarily consisted of adults. On the personal side, I am a native Georgian replete with the requisite southern accent and southern outlook, though I’ve lived a great many places both here and abroad. I resided in Memphis from 1977 to 2000. My hobbies include music (a classical guitarist), writing (both for professional and general audiences), media production, reading (mysteries), and Bible study. Next August I will have been with UOP for 16 years. I must confess that I enjoy online facilitation and like it better than face-to-face instruction.
