I began facilitating for the University of Phoenix Online in 1991 when there were 200 students and l5 instructors. I was the faculty chair of the MBA Marketing Program and received the UOP Faculty Quality Award. In the early days I worked with Dr. John Sperling in a number of development areas for the University.
I’m lucky to have been one of those people who has had at least five careers. It started with copywriting, layout and photography, and moved to video production and scriptwriting. When I began my doctorate, distance learning was just beginning. I taught at the University of MO - St. Louis and moved into developing and managing two new departments - satellite conferencing and distance learning. After graduation, I moved to San Francisco and became the executive vice president for the world’s largest company in distance learning. We ran conferences, seminars, satellite seminars and three trade magazines. I was the original director of operations for the U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA) and later helped 20 states start USDLA chapters.
I have had a number of firsts in my career which included the first satellite delivered credit course, the first commercial digital satellite broadcast and the first book about distance learning (I’m working on the fourth edition). My doctorate is in distance learning/leadership, technology and research; master’s -mass communication; bachelor’s - English, advertising and journalism with a broadcast engineering certificate.
My company has created courses for UCLA, Johns Hopkins, the Veterans Administration, Capella University, and conducted long term evaluations for the U.S. Dept. of Education, Star Schools, NASA, and two PBS programs that provided professional development for teachers. We completed a pilot of five courses for the U.S. Dept. of Justice to train probation and parole officers and now offer those courses in 38 states. We also developed an online course in Ethics/Conflict of Interest for the California State University System’s 24 campuses. I completed a project for a Silicon Valley based company that is in a joint venture with UCLA where I did the instructional design for 70 courses and coached the new instructors as they wrote their courses. I’ve taught for over 20 years at UCLA and UC-Berkeley - all in distance learning. It has been an interesting journey!
