How the Clash Between Essentialism and Progressivism Shaped Technology Adoption: A Case Study

This chapter focuses on the cultural manifestation of politics in influencing education, educational content, and the dissemination of that information through technological systems.

Abstract:

Since the establishment and implementation of the national American public school system process in the mid- late nineteenth century (Schultz, 2011), outside forces (social, cultural, political) have vied to influence, correct, manipulate, and guide educational content and conveyance in the public primary and secondary schools. Since the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, two notable educational theories have attempted to shape public education in this country; essentialist educational theory and its proponents and progressive educational theory and its proponents (Kessinger, 2011; Schutz, 2011).
