Learners to Leaders: Empowering Students to Gather, Track, Analyze, and Share Data

Abstract:

Learners to Leaders is an initiative that started Fall 2014 to improve academic and behavioral achievement at the intermediate building at Waterloo Central School. Teachers guide and support students in setting individual goals, developing an action plan to meet the goals, and writing weekly reflections on progress. Continuous tracking of goals occurs until the goals are reached, and then a new goal is identified. Linskie (as cited in Madden, 1997) asserted that students work harder on self-identified goals than they do on expectations set by others. In the Learner to Leaders initiative, students are just that, leaders. With adequate preparation and support, students are successfully communicating behavioral and academic achievement data to their families, while the teacher acts as a resource during the conference. The Learners to Leaders initiative relies heavily on collaboration, trust, evidence, and technology.
