How Female Students Describe Their Online Learning Experiences Using Social Media

Project Description: 

The purpose of the qualitative content analysis study is to explore the descriptions of online learning offered by female students via social media platforms. Research show that virtual classrooms seem particularly beneficial for female students, social media messages could be a powerful force in persuading women students to pursue education online.

Predictors of online student learning task success: A quantitative study using learning analytics

This project culminated with a publication: Clowes, M. C., Melanie Shaw, and Scott Burrus. (2017). "Using Learning Analytics to Determine Predictors of Successful Completion for Online Students." The International Journal of Adult, Community and Professional Learning 24 (2): 15-21. 

Critical Thinking and Meditation in Online Higher Education Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Project Description: 

Eighty-one percent of employers and 79% of college students believe that critical thinking is an important learning outcome related to obtaining a job and advancing in a career in 21 century. However, improvement in critical thinking skills at higher education were relatively small, suggesting that teaching methods for facilitating critical thinking at higher education might be ineffective. Meditation improves executive decision-making and might provide an effective pedagogical approach to improving critical thinking skills for online students.

Meditation and Critical Thinking and Individual Characteristics: A Quasi-Experimental Study

A limited number of studies exist on the effects of age and ethnicity, as well as gender and education, on the use of mediation to strengthen critical thinking.  The purpose of this quantitative quasi experimental study will be to investigate what are the effects of age, ethnicity, gender, and education on improvement of critical thinking skills as a result of using meditation. The research questions that will be asked are the following.

Influence of eLearning STEM Mobile Lab program on fifth grade students’ STEM interest: Teachers' Perspectives

Project Description: 

A school district in Central Florida has implemented a STEM Mobile Lab that aims to create excitement and engage students in STEM education. The program is designed to provide positive STEM learning experiences for students to promote a greater interest in STEM-related careers. The research problem for this study is the lack student science knowledge and interest in STEM-related careers.

Exploring Quality of Interaction in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning environments

Higher education leaders including teachers, administrators, and others cannot articulate the patterns of engagement that lead to effective learning within Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) classrooms.  Failing to take advantage of the interactive potential of CSCL classrooms means failing to implement an innovative educational experience that might transform student potential into adult innovations.
