Conscious and unconscious bias in hiring: Using the factorial survey approach

Abstract:

Introduction/Context

Even though the federal law, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, proscribed hiring discrimination, data to the contrary depicted the racial disparity in the hiring rates among Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014; U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2013).  One reason attributed to the racial disparity is actual bias, which occurs when hiring professionals choose not to hire job applicants of a dissimilar race due to concealed racial biases (Okpauluba & Juma, 2011).  Consequently, racial disparities may ensue throughout the workforce levels, especially if the hiring professionals are mostly of the same predominant racial group (Giuliano, Levine, & Leonard, 2009).  Thus, the outcome could be the elevation of the predominant racial group mostly to upper level jobs and the minority racial groups, such as Blacks and Hispanics, clustered more in lower level jobs.
