Abstract:

Abstract

Lacking a perspective about how virtual reality (VR) applications align to existing educational teaching and learning principles means educational leaders may not be prepared to assess, select, prepare, apply, and evaluate VR educational applications effectively leading to less than optimal learning opportunities for students.  The research question was: What principles and practices of pedagogy are evident but not articulated in selected VR applications for education? The purpose of the qualitative, directed content analysis study was to categorize  visual or text content gathered from multiple public websites in a pedagogical analysis of VR applications for education that lack articulation of pedagogical foundations. The analysis of VR applications for education showed most were experiential while others categorized as discovery learning, constructivism, situated cognition, direct instruction, or unclassified approaches. Research findings will support efforts to use innovative and measurable outcome based learning applications within an educational context. Additionally, creators of VR educational applications will gain an understanding of the need for a clear association between curriculum being taught and pedagogical foundations.
