NEW IN THIS EDITION For the current edition, almost 19 years since the first edition was published, our primary objective was to again address the valuable feedback from our reviewers. At a global level, we made the following changes in the 6th edition: • Added more detailed concept maps at the beginning of each section to graphically organize the relationship between concepts and ideas presented in each chapter within each section • Integrated critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter, linked to the chapter learning objectives, to provide students more opportunity to engage in their own thinking • Eliminated the computerized testing chapter, moving critical content to other chapters • Renamed Chapter 3 to more accurately reflect the focus on the ethical responsibilities of test publishers, test users, and test takers • Moved more important and more complex information into In Greater Depth Boxes within the chapters so that more advanced content could be either included or skipped at an instructor’s discretion without loss of instructional continuity. • Added a brief introduction to the first of three validity chapters to explain the reason for and organization of the three chapters on validity • Added new content to the reliability and validity chapters to explain via concrete numerical demonstrations the impact that random error in measurement has on reliability • Added a numerical demonstration of how to conduct a cross-validation of a test via regression • Added additional content that explains and demonstrates how to correct for attenuation in validity due to unreliability, and links it to the newly included concept of operational validity • Added a brief introduction to the survey chapter to explain why we've included a chapter on surveys in a psychological testing textbook
• Reviewed all content, terms, symbols, equations, and calculations to ensure content flowed smoothly, terms were defined clearly to eliminate existing vagueness in definitions, and symbols, equations, and calculations were accurate • Ensured all links to online resources were functional and updated featured content in our In the News Boxes and On the Web Boxes to ensure currency • Updated the Test Spotlights in Appendix A to reflect new editions of tests and additional available information on reliability and validity, as well as sample test reports.
Also new to the sixth edition is a new workbook with more practical utility for faculty and students: Student Workbook to Accompany Miller and Lovler’s Foundations of Psychological Testing: Practical and Critical Thinking Exercises. Although we know that students can learn by reading chapter material, attending class, and engaging in discussion with faculty members, we also know that more actively engaging in the learning process can help students better learn and retain chapter information. The workbook provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of material presented in the textbook and apply their learning by completing critical thinking and practical exercises linked to specific learning objectives from the textbook. Also included are chapter-level projects for students to demonstrate their understanding of multiple topics within the chapter, as well as a progressive course project that instructors may assign. The text and workbook can be purchased together, for a bundled, discounted price. Or the workbook can be purchased through sagepub.com.
