“Theoretical Foundations of Social Media and Cultural Competency”

The use of social media tools demonstrates how social media can influence society and the global community. Social media tools have the ability to provide users with enhanced skills to create and share information. While these tools have increased communication among users at many levels, a key issue concerns whether the increased use of social media effectively reflects improved communication using cultural competency.

Abstract:
The use of social media tools demonstrates how social media can influence society and the global community by providing users with enhanced skills to create and share information. According to Rodriguez (2013), social media uses different tools and platforms to allow more open interactions not only to share information but also to collaborate with other users. While these tools have increased communication among users at many levels throughout the global community, a key issue concerns whether the increased use of social media effectively reflects improved communication using cultural competency. Scholars must consider if social media tools allow users the ability to acknowledge cultural heritages, implement multicultural perspectives, and how to respect different cultural paradigms (Gay, 2000). At initial examination, users of social media tools cannot address different cultural norms and ideologies; therefore, users lack the ability to transcend and overcome these barriers of seamless communication throughout the world. However, scholars recognize that development of cultural competency can help to address global issues (Baugher, 2012). Given these considerations, the problem is how social media tools can better integrate cultural competency into the social media experience for users to enhance communication and information exchange in the global community.
