Prudence to Advance Learning and Practical Application
This 2019 writing fellowship proposal with CLSER focuses on the practical application of self-leadership behaviors and builds upon the roundtable discussion of “Prudence as a Construct to Embody Leadership for Peace and Prosperity,” (Migliore & Bean, 2018) presented at the International Leadership Association (ILA) October 25, 2018 in West Palm Beach, FL. Prudence is applied in context of self-leadership to both physical and cognitive processes, which include ability (resources) and willingness (attitude). Seven blog articles are proposed in the theme of prudence and self-leadership to apply good judgment and common sense in research - this is 2 of 7 blog articles.
Building upon the previous article, this second article applies ability as using mental representations as resources and willingness as attitude to the learning process. Research examples are included, specifically the 2019 study of New Caledonian (NC) crows to solve problems through mental representations and by preplanning several moves ahead using tools to achieve goals and sub-goals -- this study showed conclusive evidence via three experiments and is used as an analogy to the doctoral learning process. Persistence to progress and maintenance of a positive attitude are emphasized as important self-regulating behaviors for doctoral success.
