Abstract:
United States healthcare businesses are changing. Commercial interests, public policy, and patient care considerations influence health information technology (IT) investments. Despite research into the relationship between IT governance and efficient use of IT, there had been no prior research into the relationship between IT governance and the cost of patient care in the United States. This study set out to better understand the question, “what is the relationship between IT governance maturity and the IT cost-per-patient in United States healthcare systems?” A sample of 194 large United States integrated healthcare organizations was studied. A correlation analysis showed a significant inverse and non-linear relationship between IT governance maturity scores and patient care cost. This presentation will share the research findings and it may help health care leaders determine if investment into health information systems and data governance is appropriate.
