Combating colorism in Our Programs and Work
Education and early education programs are currently interested in issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, they view this topic in identity group terms - race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, etc. This article argues that within these traditional groups there also exists prejudice and discrimination. This particular article examines colorism within the larger African American group, and discusses ways education programs must address this problem.
Colorism is discrimination and prejedice by color within minority groups, particularly African Americans. It is a relic of slavery and Jim Crow laws, and can have a profound impaot on young children. This article provides suggestions on how programs can address this issue.
