Abstract:
The purpose of this current study was to identify if any correlational patterns exist between transformational leadership behaviors and individual values. Values often influence leadership behaviors. Assertions regarding the merits transformational leadership training without considering individual values as a moderator may be incomplete. Four value clusters consisting of self-transcendence, conservatism, openness to change, and self-enhancement as measured by the Portrait Value Questionnaire act as predictor variables. Transformational leadership characterized by five behavioral subscales consisting of idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, and individual motivation measured by the Multifactor Questionnaire Short Form act as the criterion variable. Participants of this current study consisted of two leadership and management courses at a university located in North Texas. Correlational relationships between individual value and transformational leadership dispositions become apparent from assessments within this current study. The findings of this study identified correlational relationships between transformational leadership and self-transcendence, conservatism, openness to change values. Consistent with previous research, the current study reinforces the construct that values influence leadership behavior. Practitioners such as human resource managers may find the results of this current study insightful in developing assessment and transformational leadership development strategies.
