We Rise for Scholarship: Detroit Market Community of Scholars Research Presentations, Part I

Several Community of Scholars members presented summaries of their research projects at the General Faculty Meeting on April 8, 2017. Presenters demonstrated scholarly leadership as they discussed the highlights of their problem-based research projects centered on challenges in industry, in education, and in society. Katherine Temple

Students and Teachers Against Violence & Crime A lesson in Servant Leadership

Katherine presented the unique aspects of her study—a challenge to present student-teacher relationships. The study “presents a radical model grounded in a philosophical foundation of morals and values, inclusive and honoring of all people who build community . . .” (B. Ellis, personal communication, April, 13, 2017, slide 18).

Dr. Belinda Moses 

How to Improve the Retention Rate of First Generation/Year Students

Dr. Moses examined questions that will guide her research: "What is the experience of first-generation students at UOPX? Does the experience of UOPX first-generation students match the experiences described in the literature for FGSs? What, if any, experiences of UOPX FGSs are unique? . . . What is the nature of FGSs struggles? How do FGSs cope? What differences exist for second generation students?" (B. Ellis, personal communication, April, 13, 2017, slide 26). Additionally, she identified a retention model that addresses various elements involved in first-generation student retention.

Sharon Matthews

The Impact of Nutrition Education on Dietary Habits & Health Status

Sharon identified the purposes of nutrition: “The process of nourishing or being nourished (supplied), especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth, repair and replacement of tissues. A process or series of processes by which the living organism or its component parts or organs is maintained in its normal (healthy) condition of life and growth. The process by which the living tissue take up, from the blood, nutritive matters necessary for the repair and the performance of their healthy functions (B. Ellis, personal communication, April, 13, 2017, slide 31). The study will examine nutrition education as it relates to the leading versus actual causes of death.

Nicole Gulley

Self-directed Learning Readiness in Accelerated, Blended Programs

Nicole discussed the highlights of her dissertation as it relates to a relevant problem: “graduates who are not prepared to be self-directed in their learning after graduation may compromise a school’s ability to attract, retain, and graduate learners who are ready to enter the workforce . . . Since many states look to universities and colleges to help drive economic growth by promoting innovation and graduating skilled employees, educational institutions that can graduate learners who are prepared to work in a knowledge-based economy will meet the expected challenges” (B. Ellis, personal communication, April, 13, 2017, slide 43).

Denied Access: Fathers are Parents, Too!

Cassandra Farley and Darrett Pullins

Cassandra and Darrett discussed the valueable purpose of their study: “to bring about an awareness of African American fathers’ parenting practices and the effects on their adolescent sons” (B. Ellis, personal communication, April, 13, 2017, slide 48).
