Positive Approaches to Doctoral Student Success

Between one-third and one-half of doctoral students never finish their program. The rates vary dependent on gender, racial and ethnic background, and socio-economic class. The literature on doctoral student persistence continues to grow, yet little is known about the individual student factors that contribute to doctoral student success in distance learning programs. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the constructs of “grit” and spiritual orientation as student-level strengths.
