Deconstructing Stormbot: A Literature Review regarding the use of telepresence robots in education

Telepresence robots captured the collective imagination when they burst onto the scene. The moment Sheldon of Big Bang Theory used one to escape germs and remain present seemed like a watershed moment: in a world moving toward people who could work at home and where business travel became more and more expensive, “’presence ‘bots” seemed like a workable solution to an intractable issue. These needs were also evident in the educational space. Students with chronic or acute illnesses and injuries could use these telepresence robots as a way to gain some of the advantages of being present in the educational space even as they are confined at home.

The research questions are as follows:

RQ1. How are telepresence robots currently being used in the education, K-HE?

RQ2. What are the potential benefits of implementation of telepresence robots in education, K-HE?

RQ3. What are the barriers to implementation regarding telepresence robots in education, K-HE?
