Arts-based instructional and curricular strategies for working with VR educational applications

Learners can enter new virtual reality (VR) worlds from any place and time; but little is known about pedagogies in VR educational applications, which can be a powerful immersive and highly visual tool for learning. An emerging visual culture replaces reliance on text; and,VR, often creates an immersive, student centered and experientially oriented educational context, which features an emphasis on visual experience. The purpose of the qualitative, directed content analysis was to provide educators and VR educational application designers with insights drawn from visual arts pedagogies, where teaching and learning also occur in a rich, visual environment and context. Analysis showed alignment between learning opportunities in visual arts classes and VR or AR applications for education. Educators could derive insights from the analysis and conclusions about new pedagogical approaches for using VR within established curricula.
