Fulbright Recipient Doug Gilbert (SAS Alum) to Present Paper on Sustainable Development

Doug Gilbert (SAS Alum), a Fulbright recipient investigating higher education in Mongolia, will be presenting his work in the Social Business Academic Conference in November. His work is titled as "Empowering Business to act as a Social Business Through SDG Focused Business Cases" Abstract: Although social businesses are making progress on pressing sustainability issues it is not enough progress and fast enough to have needed wide spread impact. Traditional corporate sustainability initiatives fail, because of a lack senior executive (CEO and CFO) support. Executives do not understand that sustainability initiatives can be good for the company as well as for the environment and society. Taken together, the lack of breadth and depth of social business and the frequent failure of corporate initiatives leave behind far too many social business ideas. A potential solution to both sides of the issue is for both social businesses and traditional companies to learn to balance social businesses with rigorous cost-benefit analysis that shows an attractive payback period and social return on investment. The Sustainability ROI Workbook, discussed in this paper and provided separately for free, frames a business case for sustainability initiatives that helps justify and accelerate the necessary transformations, in time.
