The prevalence of depression has been continuing to increase today. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquire research study was to examine stories and experiences from registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) who worked in behavioral health and identify common nutrient deficiencies and barriers they face when treating clients with depression. The objective of this study was to determine best practice when treating clients with depression and provide that practice to mental health providers and RDNs who work outside of behavioral health.

Health disparities of African Americans in the South highlight the need for nutrition-related culturally competent best practices.
